About the Artist
Dorit Figovich Goddard (b. 1958) is an Israeli artist based in Tel Aviv, graduate of HaMidrasha – Faculty of the Arts. In recent years, Goddard's practice has centered primarily on drawing. She works with materials ranging from classical drawing media to substances she creates herself, such as rust-infused water and seawater used to dilute ink and other materials.
These materials act as physical agents of change within the drawings, gradually altering them over time. In this drawing-material approach, the artist plants foreign elements that interact with the paper, the image and its processes. This sense of foreignness extends to the subjects she depicts, where uncanny elements and a nature of strangeness emerge within familiar forms.
The selected works featured on Givon on Paper represent a distinct aspect of her ongoing drawing practice, most of which consists of small-format works, with a few rare larger-scale ones. In these drawings, Goddard constructs portraits alongside architectural forms and landscapes, often embedding or isolating a recurring motif.
Goddard, who was awarded the Ministry of Culture and Sport's Prize for Encouragement of the Arts in 2019, describes her process as one of introducing a foreign presence into each drawing — an element meant to expose, draw closer, and at times soften and ease. The tension between this strangeness and a gesture of tenderness is central to her work.
