About the Artist
Michael Gitlin (b. 1943 in Cape Town, South Africa) is a prominent sculptor and artist who has lived and worked in New York since the 1970s. He was considered part of the group of Israeli minimalist artists, alongside Joshua Neustein and Buky Schwartz, who worked in New York during the 1970s and created a significant presence on the international art map.
His works are held in prestigious collections worldwide, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York, Israel Museum in Jerusalem, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and Ludwig Museum in Köln, among many others.
Gitlin studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem (1963-1967), followed by an MMFA from Pratt Institute in New York (1972). Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship (1987-1988), National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1984-1985), the Sandberg Prize from the Israel Museum (1989), and the George and Janet Jaffin Award from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation (2000).
Gitlin's work navigates the liminal space between dimensions, creating a dialectic between concealment and revelation. He began his career working three-dimensionally, first with paper and later with wood, approaching paper not as a conventional substrate but as a primary sculptural material with its own inherent qualities and possibilities. His sculptures are predominantly wall-mounted works that engage with their architectural context both physically and conceptually. The evolution of his formal language shows a transition toward more abstract and fluid compositions. The works presented in Givon on Paper represent his abstract, somewhat graphic approaches that characterized his works in the 1990s.
Among the venues where he has presented solo exhibitions are the Israel Museum, Jerusalem (2024), Petach Tikva Museum of Art (2014), MuKHA in Antwerp (1991), Städtische Kunsthalle in Mannheim (1989), and his works were exhibited in numerous institutions, including Neues Museum Weserburg (2013), David Zwirner Gallery (2008), Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (1986), and Documenta 6 in Kassel (1977), and more.
