About the Artist

Yehezkel Streichman (1906–1993) was a foundational figure in Israeli art, awarded the Israel Prize for Painting (1990) and numerous prestigious honors throughout his career.

Born in Lithuania, Streichman immigrated to Israel in 1924, beginning his studies at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem. He later expanded his artistic horizons in Europe, studying architecture in Paris and painting at the Academy of Art in Florence. Upon returning to Tel Aviv in 1935, he became a central educator, teaching at the Aharon Avni Institute. In the late 1940s, he co-founded the "New Horizons" movement, standing as one of its three visionary leaders alongside Yosef Zaritsky and Avigdor Stematsky.

The works featured in Givon on Paper focus on the mid-1980s and are considered rare and intimate within his oeuvre. These works, originating from the artist’s own sketchbooks, showcase varying levels of intensity and celebrate his lyrical abstract period with evocative references to Safed, Haifa, and Tel Aviv.

Streichman’s artistic evolution moved from early Expressionist influences in the 1930s toward a sophisticated process of abstraction during the 1950s. By the 1970s and 1980s, his style embraced a vibrant palette and fluid brushwork laid over structural geometric foundations.

His works are represented in major public and private collections, including the Israel Museum, Jerusalem; the Tel Aviv Museum of Art; and various international galleries, cementing his legacy as a master of Israeli Modernism.
