About the Artist
Lea Nikel (1918–2005) was an influential abstract painter born in Ukraine who immigrated to Palestine in 1920. Raised in Tel Aviv, she studied under Haim Gliksberg, Avigdor Stematsky, and Yehezkel Streichman.
Nikel moved to Paris to further her education, living and working there from 1950 to 1961 during a significant period in postwar European art. Influenced by the artistic and social scene in Paris, she engaged with the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the time. In the 1960s, she lived intermittently in Israel, New York, France, and later Rome. From 1973 to 1977, she resided in New York and later returned to Jaffa.
Nikel was a key figure in the second generation of abstract painters in Israel, with her works featured in prominent private and public collections worldwide. She is known for her use of color and materiality in both her canvas and paper works. Additionally, she employed various techniques such as brushwork, etching, printing, and collage.
She received a variety of awards, including the Israel Prize for Painting in 1995, the Dizengoff Prize, and the Gamzu Prize. Nikel also earned an honorary doctorate from the Weizmann Institute of Science, a UNESCO medal, and the Chevalier of Arts and Letters Award from the French Minister of Culture.
Nikel's art has been featured in solo and group shows at the Tel Aviv Museum, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Haifa Museum, and international venues in Paris, The Netherlands, New York, London, and Japan. She represented Israel at the Johannesburg Biennale (1995) and the 32nd Venice Biennale (1964).
