About the Artist
Daniel Tsal (b. 1985, New York), currently resides in Tel Aviv. He graduated from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem in 2009, and furthered his studies at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, where he was mentored by Wolfgang Tillmans. Tsal is widely known for his extensive photographic body of work, which earned him the prestigious Lauren and Mitchell Presser Photography Award for a Young Israeli Artist in 2019, followed by an extensive solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art the same year (‘Party’, 2019).
Tsal was trained as a painter and, over time, transitioned to photography—often incorporating meticulously staged portraits and elaborate urban scenes. Following a personal loss and trauma, he embarked on a return to painting and drawing, focusing on familiarity aspects mixed with unease tension.
The selected works, debuting in Givon on Paper, reflect his evolving creative journey, commenting on the transformations between direct media and abstraction, and vice versa. The works evoke a complex sense of duality; they are infused with tension and uncanniness, yet incorporate soft strokes and color palette, with noticeable pencil outlines—leading to an additional sense of eeriness and strangeness.
Tsal exhibited at esteemed institutions in Israel and abroad, including Werkstattgallery in Berlin and the Museum of Contemporary Art MACT & CACT in Tikhino, Switzerland. His works are featured in numerous private and public art collections, including the Tel Aviv Museum of Art collection.
